Psst… want me to tell you something? Here you’ll discover our secret tips to help you become an escape room pro!
It’s no secret that escape rooms are a challenge. Not sure what a room escape (also known as an exit adventure or exit game) is? Then read more here.
Tricky puzzles and well-hidden clues offer a real challenge. That’s why we’ve put together 10 tips to help you successfully solve an escape room—and maybe even set a new record time!
1. Everything is in the room!
The number one rule of every room: Everything you need to solve the escape room is inside the room—including the knowledge. All objects can be found on-site (sometimes well hidden). You also don’t need any prior knowledge to complete our escape adventures—everything you need is provided as clues within the rooms.
2. Take a close look at everything!
Look around the room very carefully and search everything.
What kinds of locks are there? Are you looking for keys, 3- or 4-digit number combinations, or letters? Are there any clues near the locks? What objects and decorations are in the room? During your search, check underneath and behind objects as well. Any items and decorations that are not permanently fixed in place may be moved. Don’t be afraid to make a bit of a mess—after all, our game masters will take care of the boring task of cleaning up for you.
3. Keyword: Organized chaos!
You should never lose track in the mess. Sometimes you’ll find items that are only needed later on—place them somewhere safe so you don’t lose them in the heat of the moment. But remember: All codes and keys only need to be used once! So place already used items and keys in a separate spot to keep a clear overview of what’s still important.
4. Talking is thinking—just as a team!
Communication is key to every successful room escape. Four eyes see more than two. Tell your teammates what you’ve found and share all important information! It’s essential that every group member always knows which puzzles have already been solved and which items have not yet been used.
Different perspectives often help when solving a puzzle. Share your ideas out loud with your teammates. Solving a puzzle can be like putting together a jigsaw: everyone has a piece of the solution, but only when you combine them does the full picture emerge.
5. Double-check everything!
If you ever get stuck during your escape adventure and feel like you’re missing something to solve the next puzzle, take another look around the room. You might have overlooked something. Are you sure you’ve solved the puzzle correctly, but the lock won’t open? Then double-check your solution. You may have missed a step or not combined everything correctly. Also pay attention to where the marker on the lock is and whether the order of the code is correct. And are you absolutely sure this is the right lock? Maybe the code fits better somewhere else.
6. The clock is ticking!
You only have 60 minutes to solve the escape room! So keep an eye on both your time and your progress. On average, you should aim to solve at least one puzzle every 10 minutes to complete the game within the given time. If you find yourselves stuck on a puzzle for too long, it’s time to ask for a hint.
7.1 Game masters are friends—not enemies
Our game masters want you to have the best possible experience at Fox in a Box Graz! That’s why you should listen to your game master’s instructions. During the introduction, you’ll receive important information about what you are and are not allowed to do in the room. If you try to open items labeled “Do not open,” you’ll end up wasting valuable time that should be spent solving puzzles.
7.2 Pro tip!
Don’t be afraid to ask for hints! Hints are helpful—they’re there to guide you. Our hints are designed to give you just enough direction to solve the puzzle or show you which elements should be combined. So even with a hint, you’ll still solve the puzzle yourself!
8. Trying beats overthinking!
The right code is useless if you never enter it. A room escape gives you the chance to try out different approaches to solving a puzzle. Got an idea about how a puzzle might work, but you’re not completely sure it’s right? Just give it a try. The important thing is to talk to your teammates about how you want to solve the puzzle!
9. Teamwork makes the Dream work!
It may sound a bit cliché, but the most important principle in a room escape is teamwork. You want to solve the escape room together—and you can only win as a team. Everyone has their own strengths. Some are especially skillful, some have an eagle eye, and others are great at organizing. Use your strengths to support the team in the best possible way.
10. Have fun!
Last but not least: Have fun! Celebrate when you open a lock and laugh when something works as expected. Let yourself be carried away by the atmosphere of the escape adventure and fully immerse yourself in the scenario!
