The code of the Zodiac Killer was cracked after more than 50 years!
“Zodiac Killer” is the pseudonym of a serial killer who was active in California, USA, in the late 1960s. He is believed to be responsible for five murders. Two other victims survived his attacks with serious injuries. His victims were mostly young couples.
The notorious serial killer himself claimed to have murdered a total of 37 people. The Zodiac Killer was never caught, and his
identity remains unknown to this day. What makes the Zodiac Killer one of the most mysterious serial killers of all time is his communication with the public.
He left messages at crime scenes and sent letters with encrypted texts to numerous newspapers. In his letters, he confessed to the murders, boasted about his actions, and toyed with investigators. Particularly notable was his self-created code, consisting of 340 different characters and symbols, which remained unsolved for a long time. Now, after more than 50 years, a step closer has been made toward solving it.
A team of volunteer codebreakers managed to decipher one of the messages that the serial killer himself had sent to the San Francisco Chronicle after years of work. US web designer David Oranchak, Australian mathematician Sam Blake, and Belgian logician Jarl Van Eycke succeeded in cracking the Zodiac Killer’s self-created code.
